Today in "ludicrous consumption news", I acquired a fur coat. I would rather have a personal demonic milquetoast, but one makes do with what one has.

In my defense, I didn't really mean to. There was an ebay auction, and I put in the minimum bid as a lark, and then I won it, to my chagrin. It's not like I can wear it anywhere. It's dyed rabbit, which I think is the fur equivalent of polyester. But it is very warm, and I don't hold heat well on my own. Also, it makes me feel the very model of decadent monarchy.

(And, yes, it bothers me, but I eat meat and wear leather, and I have never had pretensions to saintliness.)

This post demands a photo of the fur coat in question. Dyed? What color? Please, I simply must know!

I will consider this idea carefully. I think it'd be tough to get a good shot.

It's not nearly as mammoth as the one in the comic, sadly. It's black, standard short jacket length, (guy's jacket, not those ridiculous short waist-length ones women wear) and it has these amazing broad shoulders. I swear, it doubles my width. Really contributes to the Henry VIII look.

Rabbit fur in particular should be seen as avoiding waste, since the rabbits themselves were probably sold for meat.

Good point. You know, I've never had rabbit. I've never even seen it on the menu. Something really must be done -- I'm scouring yelp at this very moment.

Next time I see you, I promise to yell "FUR IS MURDER!" and then we can go out for some bacon. Y/Y?

Sounds good to me. I'll sing a few bars of "Meat is Murder", first.

I think, even if I were a vegetarian, I would insist that bacon cannot possibly come from any sort of animal. It just springs forth fully formed at the store, already in protective packets. The staff harvest it from the bins and pallets that are its natural growth medium and put it on displays.

It just seems so unnatural somehow, you know? Like pastrami.

lol I'll be waiting with a bucket of paint for when I see you again!
Actually, I learned in elementary school at some environmental field trip that compared to the damage that synthetic fabrics cause in their processing AND decomposing, fur is a more "environmentally friendly" choice because it's natural, decomposes easily and lasts practically forever. Think of all the coats you would have bought and thrown away in your lifetime contributing to waste. Now you have one that will last you that duration. Of course, the same argument could be made for 100% cotton clothing and by no means does this mean that everyone should go out and buy fur coats made from endangered species. But yeah, just something I heard. :P

You remember things from elementary school? That's really something.

I actually wear wool coats almost without exception. I'm kind of a snob that way. (Hard to believe, I know.)

And, yeah, there's not much rational reason to oppose using the outer layers of food animals as clothing. It just seems so bizarre because you don't see people wearing fur anywhere.

I think the idea is that many animals get killed JUST for their fur (or tortured in the process), and nothing else on the animal is used... that is why the whole fur-is-murder thing all got started.

But sheep are sheared, and they grow wool back, so that's animal-friendly. It's like donating for locks-for-love.
